Hibiscus Tea

So, my favourite flower is blooming like crazy this summer! I am so lucky...went and getting more in the hope that this trend can continue!
So, now, to put it to good use (not that its beauty is not use enough, but, it's time to lower the cholesterol!)

(This recipe is taken from http://mideastfood.about.com/od/drinkscoffeetea/r/hibiscus.htm)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flower
  • 1 cup sugar (granulated) - add more less for taste
  • 8 cups cold water

Preparation:

Sift through dried flowers for stems and discard. Place dried hibiscus in cold water and allow to sit for 1-2 days, or until the color has faded from the flowers. Strain the juice through a fine sieve. Toss the flowers and other thick excess you have strained.

Add sugar and stir. You can either heat this up on the stovetop or in microwave or serve chilled. Some people like to add lemon wedges or grate orange zest to add to the flavor. You can also store in the refrigerator for about 5 days.

Instead of sugar, you can try honey and instead of lemon, try lime!

Persimmon season again!!

So exicting - Last week I found three...! persimmons growing in OUR garden!!!
What a shock -we had forgotten about the fruit trees ever actually bearing fruit!!

And, the neighbours gave us some more too (as well as tomatoes from their veggie patch in Ibaraki!), so I am making more jam / compote or something stewed anyway.
This time, I am adding prunes and brown sugar. Forgot to pulp it properly, but realised mashing it in the pot is the easiest one to do!!
Oh, yummy joy!

A very big tomato!

A feather in your (shower) cap

OK, so I don't write a post (been too busy) for ages and I come back with THIS>!>!>!

small size

regular size, just like a shower cap!!

But, it is great!

Ian discovered these the other day just in the 100yen store. It is eco friendly, saves on the old cling film etc, but, in short, it is basically A SHOWER CAP!!

It does the job and does it well AND protects the environment so who are we to complain!!!

Persimmon Jam

I did it!

I made jam and didn't burn my fingers!!

It was so yummy...still is! It's more of a compote than sugary, sticky jam.

On yoghurt, on bread...it's alllllll gooooooood!

So happy with my first real cooking success!!!

(flavoured with lemon juice, lemon zest and a little bit of cinammon!)

How to make this YUM!

1) Peel, pip & pulp the fruit. (this is time consuming. Easy way is to slice the top and cut in half. De-pip , then throw in blender.)

2) I used 2/3 sugar to the amount of persimmon pulp. Simmer and cook in pot (should be a jam pot, but I don't have one).

If you like, add cinnamon, nutmeg or any spice you choose.

3) After about 15mins, add some lemon zest and fresh lemon juice.

Don't forget to sterilise the jar before add your yummy jam!
