Stealing nails!

Not my nails, but worth keeping the pictures for future references, although I doubt my capabilities would stretch to such great artistic endeavours.

Rehousing animals

It is almost 6 months since the Great Eastern earthquake, and only now, can we bring you news that people are being supportive to the face that there were animals involved too.

Here is an article printed yesterday. So many animals have already died or suffered unnecessarily. At least something is being done, even if it is so very late.

Stray Sendai kittens seek Tokyo homes

Kyodo

The government in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, is promoting the adoption of stray kittens born in Sendai following the March 11 quake and tsunami.
The first 15 kittens were brought to Tokyo on July 21 and owners for most of them have already been found, with Chiyoda Ward hoping that about 50 kittens will be accepted in the capital or its vicinity by the end of the year. Volunteers are caring for them.
The number of stray pets in Sendai has more than doubled compared with usual years.
Many kittens have also been born to runaway house cats that apparently panicked and left their homes after the disaster.

On a positive note, Selena, from JEARS, who works so very hard to feed and look after so many of the animals at the Fukushima base, just forwarded this picture. She has a driving companion! You see, you look after the animals, they look after you!

Books

I need books, so many books.

There is so much (too much?) to learn and realise that I have a lot of catching up to do.

It starts with the Japanese study. But I already have those books, I just choose not to pick them up so often. (All changing this week...honest!)

But, then there's the hobbies.

If I were in the UK, I would pop into a store and just pick up something quickly. It's not so easy here. And it's not a Japan thing, more a Kasukabe thing.

I need to get online.

...or I need to get to the local book store, but then, I need to understand more Japanese....do you see the circle?

Productivity

Well, this week was about getting things off the ground.

I have done this in many ways.

Burning the midnight oil is one.
Creating a Facebook page is another.

To be honest, Facebook promotion is the scariest of all. Showing any work I have done leaves me open to criticism and it is scary. However, to have a stranger criticise, I can ignore, but to have someone you know judge you is difficult.

But, I must remember that, not all if it is going to be criticism. Hopefully there is actually something there for people to like (not just the page).

So, for those who you who want to see what I am talking about, click here - My Facebook Page. I hope you will enjoy.

On another note, did you know that the word 'Facebook' has made it into spell check? I am being pulled up for my lack of capitals and for not making it the proper noun that it is! Shame on me.

Flower baskets

I am very pleasantly surprised at one basket in particular...

I planted some Ivy. You can't go too wrong with Ivy, can you?

And, some ポーチュラカ (Portulaca umbraticola) , which, incidentally, looked as if it would not make it when I planted it last week, but there it is at the front, bursting out of the basket! It has grown a lot in the past week alone. It is an American weed originally and flourishes in the sunlight. Sadly, the sun has just disappeared for a few days....

and some イエロームーン (Yellow moon?). I'm not sure of the translation exactly, but it is a very pretty and popular flower.

This basket below, we inherited form Shane, who has just left Japan. Geraniums are great flowers. Here's hoping they flourish too!

Too busy procrastinating...

Honestly, I have just rearranged all my pens, pencils, post-its....

Get on with your work, Lee!!!!
OK, but before I do...have to share this!!

We got Elbi a new bean bag this week...Why???

Can you see all the white balls??
The bean bag exploded on him!
He got a little too excited the other day while the cover was off!

And, quite simply, no other cushion or blanket will do. If he isn't trying to hump it, he is trying to eat it!!

No, he wants a bean bag!

Oh, how he loves it so....

(My) Tohoku update

Being back from holiday is great. feeling so ready and refreshed to do so much.As I wrote before, there was to be one promise and that was 'my pace'.Sadly, this pace includes the financial path as well as the mental one.

If I could have it my way, I would be back now to help this weekend. But, such things are not possible.

Work, Elbi, many personal projects (work related) and then some visitors too, all stop me from dropping things and going up north.

So many people are helping and this is great.

We have a plan to go up (my husband and I together) once again in October. There is a long weekend, and we can devote more time to the work needed.

In the meantime, there is still plently to be done from Saitama. JEARS is still running strong and we must update the facebook page almost daily. The animals are all being cared for by amazing people who still need our support.

Sadly, Susie had to return to the shelter she came from. Having two dogs completely opposite to each other was difficult. She needed walking at 5am, Elbi just wanted to muck around. He never accepted her, she never responded to his play requests and subsequently hit back one time damaging his eyes (now recovered - phew).

The shelter is is at, is HEART, Tokushima. I have mentioned it before (one of the 3 JEARS shelters). We promised to go down and help at the shelter, but I just checked the flights down there and it isn't cheap, so we may have to wait until we have a longer break in order to use the time more wisely.

In the meantime, we are still collecting donations
and you can read about all the updates on our facebook page.

London riots - The aftermath

I haven't really ranted here about the events of last week so much, but I feel I should, just a little bit.

I have never really been political per se. Right and left meant nothing much. Even a knife and fork can change hands, and so do the plans and manifestos of the governments.

I have never really believed that one person could be so strongly swayed in just the one direction and I still believe this.

So, if you ask me whether or not I am a full blown conservative, don't expect a direct response.

I hate it when people so stubbornly claim to be on one side (whichever that may be, people are always stubborn, but they usually choose the side they believe to be the right one!) and, as a result, come out with some harsh criticisms of the other.

In the UK right now, people are blaming the government. What government, we don't know. Certainly the rioters don't know...

Listen here for a horrendous example of who is involved and the mind set.

They talk about the fun of it. Sure, drinking at 9am can be wild. Hopefully they will have a hangover to teach them something to that effect

But, they talk about 'showing the police that they can do what they want.' It's a kind of freedom, then, I can only assume, proof that they, the rioters are in control.

But, who are the rioters exactly?

We have had reports of an Olympic hopeful, supposedly representing UK next year (remember we are supposed to be hosting the Olympics next year too), I read about a 12 year old, (whose mother blames the government for creating enough things to do for her child), there was a doctor's daughter, a millionaire's daughter too. How are they disgruntled?

There wasn't just the 'yoof' with nothing to do but go on a crazy spree, there were men in their 40's too.

I have been told that they are just 'angry' people. Angry about what I wonder? Job cuts, unemployment, dim prospects....

I am not going to be anywhere near the top of the line in advertising my home country, nor city as a place of paradise. but, it isn't all that depressing is it?

Ok, so there are no 'youth centres' for the kids to hang out and occupy themselves when they aren't at school.  Let me just point out, that I was on my way home from a youth centre when I was mugged at knife point in south London. I was 11, my attackers, 16. Youth centres are not the answer.

I haven't lived in England for almost 6 years, so, yes, I am out of the loop. However, I knew that I had to study to make it (what/wherever 'it' was - still learning). I knew that there was a difference between right and wrong. Surely this is a basic instinct?

But riots, revolutions, passionate protests aren't always about basic instincts. They aren't even about getting results, but no one is going to stop to think about it, are they?

One brave lady even tried to tell the rioters this as they ran amok on the streets of Hackney. You may have already seen it (it made it to various news sources).

And she is so right in her words.

What results did the rioters want last week? New trainers & a six month jail term?

Yes, the law is coming down so super hard on this rioters. Some say too hard (labour /liberal supporters) and some say not hard enough (conservative supporters).

I say they deserve the penance for sure. You commit a crime, you do the time. It is simple logic and nothing left or right, well just right.

There is talk of taking away their benefits (super conservative). It is true, some people are living on ridiculous benefits.

This is nothing to do with rioters, but a family from Somalia are living in rented accommodation. They have just moved form the north to Camden council area, and are in a house where the rent is £8,000 ((!!!)) a week. Camden council are picking up this bill. The saddest thing here is that that money could house so many families from Somalia. It isn't a question about immigration, but about balance and fairness.

Now, those who say that the conservatives have caused all this damage, we must remember that we had labour before for 13 years. Those who do remember, are pointing out that both governments are Thatcher's doing.

Now, I was a lot younger, and I don't remember her policies so much. But, I do remember there was no bullshit. I also know that it was the current conservative government who actually lowered the maximum housing rental allowance to the unemployed to £400!!! That is quite the sum and you can get a neat pad for that in zone 3/4.

We need balance.

I agree with some of the jail terms, although I wonder what purpose it will serve later down the line. Will anyone learn?

I agree with the Liberal Democrat suggestion of getting people to do community service as punishment. Doing time and helping the communities (they have damaged) will teach them so much. It can teach anyone a lot, criminal or otherwise.

So where is the balance between the apparent conservative's headline grabbing sentences (I can't say I agree with four years imprisonment for inciting a riot on facebook, when some murderers get let of with less than this) and those who believe it would be more important 'talking to the rioters'???

We have a big rift going on amongst the UK coalition government.

One of the things we need to be prepared for is that that this may happen again. It may not be in such a  scale, but there will always be rebellion, especially in the UK. What we need to do is find out why it happens / has happened (during their community service/jail time, of course) and be prepared.

It is pointless fighting crime with few cell spaces or adequate laws in place.

Good luck England! You're going to need it!

Aliens in the garden!!

Have to share this picture!

Look closely!

It is, in fact, just a caterpillar.

But, look at the way he is 'sitting'. it took just a few shots to get this one of him 'looking' at me, just as he is 'crossing his legs.

He had been bending in  half to clean/eat/do something to his tail/bottom /I don't know.

Sadly, I found his remains just a few days after. He didn't even make it to be a butterfly...

The power of a toothpick!!

Don't ever buy cheap nail varnish!! It just isn't worth it.

All those hopes and dreams picked away only days after being realised!

Pampering is a very important ingredient in every woman's life. we don't do it enough. Anything from tiem, money or simple lack of creative ability can stop us.

Well, from now on, I shall not be hindered.

This entry, and more with the tags below, will be about nail art.

I have been pampered a few times in Bali to know now that nails can look as cute and as flowery as the dress you might be wearing.

Nail art is fun but I realise that the fun lies more in someone else (and more artistic) doing it than yours truly.

However, I can still triumph in some 'nice nails' and I have decided to collect pictures of various designs.

Done in Bali.
While I like it, I also can't help thinking they are mini soccer balls on my toes.
Very easy to do by yourself.

Also done in Bali.
Very cute, but I cannot imagine me doing it left-handed without cocking it up.
The mini football flowers can go anywhere.

Oh, look, more Bali!
My favourite, the orchid

Again, more Bali.
Cute, but, actually too much for each fingernail.

DIY.
Looks retro and rather disco.

You can never go wrong with sparkles.
The ends are silver, so it is not quite a French manicure, more party style again.

Sun, Fun & Flowers

Man, it is hot today.

32/33 degrees with the humidity level varying from 70-90%.

So, it would be quite fitting that we choose today to start decking out the garden!

The delivery came today, so we have decking panels, stands that will look reeeeeeeeeally good when we can be bothered to make them and heaps of soil, but somehow not (never) enough.

As I popped my head outside, I was surprised to see my HIBISCUS already flowering. It was not like that yesterday! Happy cheers for Lee!!!

Such a lovely flower!
What made me giggle then, was our lovely neighbour, who seems to take an interest in our interest of 'the garden'. Within a few words, she was uprooting her Shiso (PERILLA) and planting in amongst our basil.
Incidentally, she had no idea why we would want to cultivate basil. Intriguing as I had no idea why we would want Shiso...until I moved to Japan, that is. I am not a huge fan of the leaf, but I don't mind it in tempura batter.

To end with, I have to say that I found another kemushi!!! He looks like an evil beggar, his tail lifting up slightly and yes, he looks like he wants to sting you. He escaped my trap, though, so I have to hope that he doesn't attack my pears again

Green fingers, sticky fingers

So, perhaps inspired from a sugar high after eating this, -
Amazing blueberry dessert in delicate puff pastry.
Must be eaten with a knife & fork!!
I remembered that 'My pace' was a slow one if not pushed gently in the right direction.

From now on, things on this blog will vary so much from my slowly developing hobby of flowers and greenery to things like home made beauty remedies (Oh, the things you can do with olive oil!!! More soon).

I figure that if I use the blog for them, then there are all my notes thanks to a simple tag.

My love of flowers etc has been around since my very early years, when my mother let me have some of the garden to make a veggie patch. Since then, I admit I haven't paid much attention to anything other than the colours and whether I can keep them a live or not.

All that shall change henceforth.

I want to try and learn names, know seasons and such intricate details for the little things that light up our garden. And, it is having this garden that has got me all excited about plants once again.

So, with my tag 'green fingers', I shall collate some sort of diary about our garden life!!

One of the main plants I am fascinated by, mostly because it survived our 3 week absence by simply soaking in the sunlight is the ANTHURNIUM. It's a flamingo lily, I think and apparently its flowers are hermaphrodite (male and female).

Mine is red, to match the wild room colours. Here it is in all its glory next to a little Marimo (moss ball) I bought today (You may not be able to see, but there are small red beads in the jar - it really is all about co ordination.)

Tomorrow, we have another delivery from the garden centre. This time it's decking and the like. Not enough flowers for my liking. Actually, there really never are enough!

However, as I plant, I promise to study and learn, as well as make beautiful baskets!

Right, now to my other blogs!! Busy, busy, but still...My Pace!!!

London Riots

Wow, after three nights of crazy behaviour, riots, endless looting and a shameful amount of damage to buildings and material possessions, London, as well as the rest of the country braces itself for what could be another night or fearful terror.

At this stage, the concern is that this will never end. And with the softly-softly approach that the police and the government are adopting, it won't. One more night in London alone and the whole place will be ruined. Already livelihoods of individuals and long term family businesses have been ruined, destroyed and burnt, despite claims that the purpose is to attack the big commercial companies.

Londoners especially want more, the army, water cannons, anything that will show that we are not weak. London is our city too. From afar I suddenly feel so saddened that my home city is half in flames.

Today we are waiting on news from the government officials and their decisions on what to do. We know that an extra 10,000 police officer are being deployed to London, but what if there is more trouble outside the capital? It surely cannot be allowed to happen one more night...

We just heard this on BBC WORLD. In an interview with two 17 year olds. The girls were drinking in Croyden, drinking 'free booze, innit and proclaimed they were rebelling 'against the rich people and the government, conservative/labour...whatever'. Despicable.

On a positive note, Londoners are fighting back and getting ready to clean their streets, but not without being scared of it all erupting one more time.

I can see a late night ahead as I am glued one more time to the news.

Clearly the perpetrators will not learn the error of their ways and grind to a halt. Urgent action is the only thing that will stop this. Come on England, less talk, more rigorous action.

5.5 memories

My friend Emily has is back in Japan. We used to study together in Sendai. I guess talking about times gone by has prompted me to sift through pictures.

I cannot believe I have been here so long! It's great!

There are so many memories that I am just looking at them and smiling.

I'm doing a facebook album so I can share with my friends and a few collages here for me to glance at with ease.

My Pace

From now on, 'My pace' is the only pace.

Yes, we are back and I have adopted this great bit of katakana as my new motto.

Before we left Japan, it is safe to say that we had taken on far more than we could handle and were pushing ourselves far too much.

Life with Susie was not a simple one, especially not with all the other daily chores such as life, work and endlessly trying to save the world.

Well, I have come to realise that the world cannot be saved with no energy and no time, so these are the things I shall now focus on.

All in good time, while making sure to allow plenty of time for family and work life.

One other thing that this time away has reignited is the taste for adventure. It had been a (mad, busy) year since our last vacation and we can now remember the importance of time-out, adventure and exploration.

In short, this holiday did what it should. We are ready to continue with our hard work but with a lot of balance for our own peace of mind.

More on the blogs soon....my pace, remember.
